How do you add or take away music from an iPod?

For christmas I recieved an 80gb 6th generation iPod classic. It came preloaded with 5,000 something songs and 20 movies. Is it possible to take away some of the songs, and add from my own collection without erasing the music from the iPod? If so, how? (I have iTunes by the way)
The music came pre-loaded, and I don’t have most of the songs in my iTunes.

You just set itunes to manually edit the songs you want in your ipod. After doing that, you will delete those songs from your ipod, but I am not too sure if you can keep them if they are NOT in your itunes library.
